Project Bio

Climate change is a hot topic nowadays - and for good reason.

Scientific research has reported unprecedented changes in our climate. Intensified weather, changes to rainfall patterns and higher temperatures have cost not just money, but also lives. Over the last 40 years, events related to climate change have resulted in huge financial losses for the EU.  However - more startlingly - between 1980 and 2020 over 138 000 people have lost their lives due to extreme weather.

Under the European climate law, EU member countries need to do reduce their greenhouse gas emissions by 55% (compared to emission levels from 1990) by 2030, with the goal of making the EU climate neutral by 2050. Another EU initiative is the “Fit for 55” package, which is a set of proposed revisions to current legislation and covers topics such as energy, transport, trading and land use. The EU plans to turn these revisions into EU law, and negotiations are currently ongoing.

To read more about the EU's stance on climate change, see this webpage.

These measures are predominantly targeting organisations, but it’s also important to think about our actions as individuals. As a result, learning how to develop green competences is crucial. Green competences relate to adopting habits which reduce negative environmental impact on the earth. This could include practices such as reducing waste, repurposing items and relying on public transport rather than taking a car.

Nowadays school curriculums often include elements of sustainability. However, when it comes to VET education there is much less material available which would help VET educators foster green competences in their students. The DEED project aims to raise awareness of these types of practices by integrating them into VET curriculum. In order to keep the content as accessible as possible, the focus is on digital content which will be customisable to different types of learners.

Project Objectives

Raise awareness of green competences, why they are so important, and give VET teachers useful resources to integrate the teaching of green competences in their classes with an innovative digital approach.

Partnerships

There are 7 different partners involved in the DEED project. These organisations include associations, SMEs, VET centres, non-profits and university institutes, each with their own set of expertise in the field of education.

Main Project Outputs

  • Create and contribute to a professional network in the field of environmental education
  • Develop a set of digital tools for the VET teachers and trainers to help their students develop green competences
  • Deliver the digital tools to VET educators and provide guidance on how to implement them in their vocational lessons
  • Spread the results within the professional network.

Project outputs will be available to the public as open source in October 2024.
